Dream Comes True At Gexa

Hall and John Oates: Dream Comes True At GexaIt's been more than a decade since Daryl Hall and John Oates have recorded any new original music together, but that hasn't stopped them from spending a lot of time on the road, sharing their enormous catalog of hits from the 70's and 80's. Their "Dreams Come True" Tour opened in Dallas at the Gexa Energy Pavilion, and they took thousands of adoring fans on a musical journey back in time.

Hall and John Oates: Dream Comes True At GexaThe cool thing about a Hall & Oates show is that they have so many hits that you never know which ones will be played when you go to see them. They're one of those groups who will never play everything you want to hear, but they'll also surprise you with some classics that you forgot about. On this particular night, a crunchy rock version of "Out of Touch" and a slowed down, mellow rendition of "Maneater" kicked things off, whipping the 80's crowd into a frenzy. The momentum really picked up a few songs later, however, as they blazed through their cover of The Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'," causing everyone in the venue to dance and sing along.

Now that they had the audience in the right mood, they dove into the more soulful 70's material. Daryl Hall's vocals were smooth as silk, and John Oates harmonized beautifully as they delivered a trio of passionate R&B songs, including crowd-pleasing favorites "She's Gone" and "Sara Smile," as well as the more obscure "Do What You Want, Be What You Are." Multi-instrumentalist Charles DeChant had us mesmerized by his sax solos, while guitarist Shane Theriot's solos were subtle and cool. The band was truly at its finest at this point in the show, leaving us wondering what could possibly come next.

The regular set ended with "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)," featuring several minutes of intense instrumental jamming, and some improvised powerhouse vocals from percussionist Porter Carroll. The first encore pumped everyone up with the upbeat hits "Rich Girl" and "You Make My Dreams," then "Kiss on My List" and "Private Eyes" had us all singing and clapping along during the second.

As satisfied as everybody was when the show ended, it was easy to list the hits that were left out like "Family Man," "Everything Your Heart Desires," "Adult Education," and "One on One," but that's exactly what the band wants. You just heard how good all of these songs sounded. Now you'll come back next time to see if they'll play the songs that were left out. Hall & Oates couldn't possibly fit all of their hits into one performance, but they'll always let you know how much fun it is to hear them live. I know I'll keep going as long as they're around.
