Getting Sweeter By The Year
Thirty four years ago I first witnessed April Wine perform live in 1981... and now, I had the good fortune of obtaining media credentials to experience April Wine once again this time at The Grand Casino Event Center in Shawnee, OK.
Recently built in 2013, the Event Center has a 2000 seating capacity. Upon entering, I was impressed by the intimacy of the venue with the two-story layout and plush carpet flooring and bar inside.
April Wine began their 2015 tour in February in Santa Fe, New Mexico and ending at the Grand Casino Event Center in Shawnee, Oklahoma before heading back to finish a few more shows in Canada. The long road coming to an end.
LA Down boys, Warrant opened for April Wine and had a strong set but April Wine’s first song, "Fast Train" set the pace for an excellent evening of music to come.
Myles Goodwin and Brian Greenway proved to the energetic fans that these old guys still have it, belting out a string of their hit songs "Just between You and Me," "I Like to Rock," "Anything You Want You Got It" and "Sign of a Gypsy Queen."
Other favorites included "Telling’ Me Lies," "Drop Your Guns," "Weeping Willow" and "Rock N’ Roll is a Vicious Game." April Wine played a couple cover songs: "You could’ve been a Lady" by Hot Chocolate and a great rendition of King Crimson’s classic song "21st Century Schizoid Man."
The band ended their set with "Roller," a popular top forty hit off their seventh studio album First Glance, which had the cheering audience demanding more as April Wine walked off the stage; soon to return for an encore with a concert favorite "Oowatanite."
Yep….These old guys still have it! April Wine still rocks. Enough said.
