The Spirit Of Hendrix Lives On!!
Back on the road is the Experience Hendrix Tour with a cast of great musicians that would thrill the hardest critics. A tribute to the worlds most innovative guitarist of our time, Jimi Hendrix. The show at Verizon Theatre kicked off with a brief but joyful words by Janie Hendrix, Jimi's half blood sister, and CEO of the Hendrix Estates.
With legendary guitar players such as Buddy Guy, Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Black Label Society's Zakk Wylde how can you not love this line up. Texas musician Eric Johnson and Double Trouble drummer, Chris 'Whipper' Layton were also on this bill and show favorites.
Kicking off the show with Dweezil Zappa, Manto Nanji and ex Band Of Gypsy bassist, Billy Cox, the show started smooth with "Freedom" from Hendrix's' classic LP Cry Of Love.
If I was to go through the show song by song... it would be extreme. The highlights, and there were many, I would have to say seeing Eric Johnson perform "Are You Experience" with Zakk Wylde on keyboards... that was just nuts! Could that get any better??? oh hell yeah... that was followed by Zakk playing "Purple Haze" with the longest guitar solo ever! Zakk, Breathe Bro!
So many Hendrix classic songs one after another, it was hard to keep up. Texas favorite, Doyle Bramhall II kicked off the second part of the show with a sweet rendition of "Gypsy Boy" that set the mood to mellow, but not for long as he cranked into"Shelter From The Storm" right after!
The jams continued with Jonny Lang as he performed "All Along The Watchtower" with Zakk Wylde on lead guitar. Quite a stunning event watching these talented musicians switch out like a baseball all-stars game. It was truly a magnificent display of showmanship.
Another great momnet of the night was "Voodoo Chili" by Kenny Wayne Shepherd, that alone was a show stopper! Vocalist Noah Hunt was simply brilliant which earned a standing ovation from the aging crowd. Kenny is such a monster with the six string in hand, one cannot be amazed and touched watching him deliver such an intense performance. He owned the stage!
To finish up the night was the legendary Buddy Guy. To know Buddy is to Love Buddy! In him alone lives the spirit of the blues and the tradition of the Experience Hendrix Tour! Comical and entertaining, Buddy controls the crowd with a few words and and handful of guitar chords. A master to his trade, he never disappoints. One of the best moments of the night when they played "Changes" a solid number by the late great Buddy Miles.
Quite the evening of classic Jimi Hendrix performed by todays contemporary blues artists with a few obscure talent as well. The line up changes from show to show, so check out the website for complete musician appearance. Go see this tour, it's worth every penny!
